چکیده
Reviewer #2 I have read the article “A Complete Parameterization of the Relative Humidity and Wavelength Dependence of the Refractive Index of Hygroscopic Inorganic Aerosol Particles” by the authors Cotterell et al. submitted to Atmos. Chem. Phys. Discuss. This paper provides the refractive indices for aerosol particles composed of salt and water using several atmospherically relevant salts as a function of relative humidity from 100% RH to the efflorescence of the salt. Several wavelengths in the visible were used and dispersion coefficients were derived to obtain the refractive index at intermediate values. The significance of the article is summarized in section 4 “these ...[data] represent the most comprehensive description of refractive index for atmospherically relevant inorganic aerosol, fully characterizing the RI variation with both visible wavelength[s] and RH”. I have only a few minor comments that should be addressed.

Calculations of aerosol radiative forcing require knowledge of wavelength-dependent aerosol optical properties, 10 such as single scattering albedo. These aerosol optical properties can be calculated using Mie theory from knowledge of the key microphysical properties of particle size and refractive index, assuming that atmospheric particles are well-approximated to be spherical and homogeneous....
متن کاملInteractive comment on “Hygroscopic growth and activation of HULIS particles: experimental data and a new iterative parameterization scheme for complex aerosol particles” by M. Ziese et al
Review: The manuscript shows laboratory results on activation and hygroscopic growth (up to 99.75% relative humidity) of aerosol particles made by HULIS and HULIS plus other species. These experimental data are further used to derive parameterizations for HULIS hygroscopicity and activation. The work is interesting and worth publication with some modifications. 1) I suggest to the authors to di...
متن کاملDirect measurements of the optical cross sections and refractive indices of individual volatile and hygroscopic aerosol particles.
We present measurements of the evolving extinction cross sections of individual aerosol particles (spanning 700-2500 nm in radius) during the evaporation of volatile components or hygroscopic growth using a combination of a single particle trap formed from a Bessel light beam and cavity ring-down spectroscopy. For single component organic aerosol droplets of 1,2,6-hexanetriol, polyethylene glyc...
